Alvan Quamina’s Glory to Glory is a thorough investigation into the indication and identification of Jehovah-El Elyon. As a thesis on the most highest, it is chock full of eye-opening and critically insightful observations. Yet, before the brilliance of Quamina’s investigations can be brought further to light, perhaps it is best to wade into the shallow depths.
On The Most Highest
Jehovah-El Elyon is a divine name, the very utterance of which evokes majesty and grandeur. Morphologically speaking, it is the fusion of two of God’s titles, both of whom contribute to the proper conveyance of God’s sovereignty and supremacy.
The first half is from a pronunciation of YHWH, Jehovah, which in Hebrew, usually translated to LORD. The second half, El Elyon, is another Hebrew term that meant “God Most High” and which is something that can be found in Genesis 14:18.
Thus, this composite name, Jehovah-El Elyon, reveals God’s multifacted nature, being the LORD of anything and everything, precisely because He is God Most High.

To better understand the nature of God and His underlying nature, one must first study His names–and there are many–and one of the most significant of them is precisely Jehovah-El Elyon. As has been said above, there are two parts, and each must be unpacked separately.
“Jehovah” is the sacred and ineffable name that was revealed to Moses when he encountered the bush in Exodus 3:14. The name reveals to believers the eternal being of God and His great power. It is also the name of God when He gifts the Israelites the covenant and the promise tied to it; as such, the name is an indication of His active involvement with His chosen people and His commitment to them.
On the other hand, “El Elyon” is the title that speaks most of His absolute sovereignty and supremacy over all. While “El Elyon” is spoken and regarded as a single unit “El Elyon,” the name is actually composed of two words: “El,” which is Hebrew for God, and “Elyon,” which is Hebrew for Most High. This title is a reminder of His exalted position above His creations and the earthly rulers they may have enshrined. God is Most High because He has dominion over all that can be seen and cannot be.
Ruminating on the Most Highest
The very premise of studying the names of God, especially Jehovah-El Elyon, “The Lord God Most High,” is a profoundly spiritual experience. By poring through the origins and usages of these names, one develops a better and more grounded relationship with God and a better understanding of His grand and all-encompassing nature. There is power in names, and there is power in learning those names.
Learning about Jehovah-El Elyon means encountering God’s many gifts for His creations because one undergoes a spiritual journey across His many deeds; thus, security is fostered. Furthermore, recognizing the profundity of God’s names offers one explicit reminder of His supreme power, which conveys His omniscience and His involvement in all things. Possession of this knowledge is the most powerful medicine because it alleviates all anxieties and fears while also granting one great courage and fervor. It is the acknowledgment of these names that assures believers of His unwavering love and commitment to His followers.

The name/title of “Jehovah-El Elyon” invites the faithful to deeply contemplate the vastness of God’s power and the depth of His love. There is power in names, and there is power in learning of them; thus, Jehovah-El Elyon reminds all that God as an entity is both the sovereign–the only one–and the personal guide, who has enough power and authority to care for everyone as a shepherd tends to their flock.
Alvan Quamina’s Glory to Glory challenges readers to acknowledge the authority of God over their lives and to offer their trust in His mysterious and ineffable designs. He is the Most High, the Most Highest, the Sovereign of Heaven and of Earth and all the Realms in Between.
